Community

The Greater Santa Barbara Ice Skating Association (GSBISA) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization created with the mission to construct and operate Ice in Paradise, a public ice skating and ice recreational facility for the youth, students, families and the surrounding Santa Barbara Community. Our state-of-the-art ice arena provides year-round ice recreation for people of all ages and abilities.

As you enjoy our new facility, please recognize the people that made it possible: our major donors, those who have purchased a brick for the outdoor Donor Park, those who have made a financial donation of any amount, and our volunteers. Without these donations and volunteers, Ice in Paradise would not be here. Please consider joining the Ice in Paradise Family by making a donation or buying a brick today!

Ice in Paradise also serves the community by hosting ice skating fundraisers and donating hundreds of gift certificates to local organizations, schools, and non-profits in the Santa Barbara County area.

Thank you for your support of Ice in Paradise!

Sincerely,

GSBISA Board of Directors

"Skating Away with Juan"

My Life...

Hello, my name is Juan Sebastian Valtierra. I’m 13 years old and I am an ice skater at Ice In Paradise in Goleta, California. I was born with Fibular Hemimelia which means I was missing the fibula bone in one leg. When I was one year old I had an operation that removed part of my leg and I have had a prosthetic since then.

When I was 7 years old I was invited to go see an ice skating show in Oxnard California and I decided that I wanted to learn to skate. Thanks to the generosity of my coach Terry Tonius along with other coaches and friends, I have succeeded in ice skating and it has now become my passion. I have done many ice shows and competitions and have competed in two ISI World Championships with kids from around the world. In July 2017 I placed second in my division at ISI Worlds in Anaheim California.

I love volunteering my time to the skating school at Ice In Paradise. I enjoy helping the beginners so that they can enjoy skating like I do. Unfortunately my prosthetic leg broke a few weeks ago and it must be replaced. My life has become difficult because many of my daily tasks and my skating have become a struggle.

Achilles Orthopedics in Santa Barbara is the company that will be making my new prosthetic but we need donations to cover the cost. Anything would be appreciated and thank you for you time and consideration.
